The float bowl on the carb will be full however and will contain enough fuel to run the engine at tickover for a minute or so. Turning the engine over with the starter for a minute or so may empty the float bowl but it might cost you a new starter motor. Most probably it's fouled the plug from not running right and the fucked plug isn't igniting the stupidly rich mixture.

Good point, in this situation I would normally use the massive hill next to my house to "bump" start it over about a quater of a mile of downhill. With your poor starting you might of fouled the plugs in turn makin it hard work for yourself again. Just about to inspect the spark plugs but I can't get the tool down to reach the plugs, do I need to remove the radiator to get to them thus the side fairing as well? Most of the time, the tank and side pannels are the only things that need to be moved. Bolts are underneath the seat usually. I just unbolt the tank and turn it sideways, making sure there's enough fuel hose and that the tank is stable.

My Engine Cranks but Won't Start

The solenoid works as a switch that sends a high current to your starter when you push the start button or turn the key. For it to work you need to make sure it is getting power from the battery. If it does, you know it is getting power and the problem is likely with the solenoid itself or possibly the starter. Solenoid and starter issues will be covered later in the post. If you do NOT hear a clicking sound, you can use a multimeter or voltmeter to verify that the solenoid is in fact not getting power.
Look for loose or corroded terminals or shorts from damaged cables. If the plug is dry, the bike is not getting fuel and you need to continue the troubleshooting as described below. If the spark plug is still dry after cranking the engine for a few seconds, you know that fuel for some reason is not getting to the cylinder. Thread starter Kat Start date Jan 6, I got back from an 8-day Christmas vacation to discover that the battery in my ninja was toast; I charged it up but it gave me one attempt at starting the bike before losing its charge. So I replaced it. Then the bike turned over just fine but wouldn't catch, even with starting fluid, and compensating for me flooding it on the first attempt turned off fuel valve, turned off choke, tried to start it with throttle held partway open - multiple attempts.
Figured while I had the gas tank off I'd clean the air filter, which disintegrated when I applied dish soap to it.
Going to pick up a new one locally here in a bit. I don't know if replacing the plugs will solve the problem. Taking off the carbs and cleaning them is outside my area of experience, and I'd pay beer to get some help with that, if possible. Tried to drain the carb bowls, but I can't get the screws to turn - one of them just won't turn; the other has stripped just enough that I can't apply any force to it. Yet cleaning all the items you mentioned couldn't hurt other than if you mess something up in the process, that's just another rat trail you'll have to run down. Bike was running fine and sounded normal when I shut it off, so I'm going to move mechanical compression problem to the bottom of the possibility list. Once I do that, put in the new air filter, and replace the inline fuel filter, I'll give it a go again. Also, I had been spraying the starting fluid into the airbox. I've checked all of the following, but the it still won't start when cool. The spark plug gets saturated with gas after cranking - choke or no choke. After I warmed the head with a blowing propane heater and it did finally start and would start easily when the engine was warm.
I know somtimes when you pull it out to check the spark it will but then when it is undercompression in the chamber it won't. Bad Plug It happened a few times to friends and is always a easy try if you have one lying around.
A cold engine is harder to turn over. The only other option I can think of is that the timing is slightly off.

It is hard to say because it starts right up when warm. I am just guessing something with the spark because it looks like you have enough fuel. Wondering what he will test that I havent already done. Nothing much was wrong, but he didn't like the brass aftermarket main jet needle. He changed it back to the stock needle. He said most aftermarket needle sets were in spec. He wanted to keep it over night and check some other things in the morning after it was completely cool.
They are still trying to figure out why it starts and runs like a champ when warm, but wont try to start when the engine is the least bit cool. They don't have a clue. I know it's 15 years old, but it only has only easy miles on it. I'm going to pull the head and check for carbon build up, but I still don't understand how it starts and idles like a champ when it's warm. I believe i've got a bad ring or cylinder wall letting small amounts of oil into the combustion chamber.
